Synovial Joints
Structural Characteristics
bone ends are cover wih articular cartilage and are enclosed with an articular capsule lined with a syovial membrane. Inside the membrane there is synovial fluid, which provides the lubrication for the joint.
Plane - freely moveable found in the bones of the wrist
Hinge - moves back and forth in one direction, found in the elbow and knee
Pivot- allows rotation, found in tyhe elbow, enables the arm to rotate i the distal region.
Condyloid- allows for movement in three directons, found in the knuckles of the fingers
Saddle- allows the same movements as the condyloid, but is specifically located in the thumb
Ball-and-socket- the joint that allows the most movement, and is found in our major joints (hip, shoulder)
